Elements of Woman

This project began as a self exploration in being a woman and embarking on the most feminine experience - becoming a mother - and reflecting on the effects it had on me mentally and physically. I began by building an archive of images; looking at the female body from new perspectives, trying to find ways to peel back the layers and shed light on something we rarely if at all get to see.

I decided to pursue using printmaking techniques to express my findings from the research I’d conducted and the memories I held. Building on my archive with drawings, layering images in multiple ways, trying to find what I felt to fall on to the page, hoping my work will connect my stories and feelings with an audience I know hold similar ones within themselves.

I found that this journey, even though it felt isolating, really connected me to other women in a whole new way. No matter where I went I would meet some very beautiful women with similar aches, pains and bothers as me that could sympathise with me in a way that my husband couldn’t. Even though not one woman’s journey was the same we we’re all connected, alone but together, the same yet different, but all together.

.Elements Of Woman can be purchased as prints.

Artist Statement

This project aims to address the idealisation of the female form and the transformation the body undergoes during pregnancy. I aim to rectify the conflict women experience with their body's during and after pregnancy.

With the use of printmaking and painting as tools to explore these issues and create a space for social change where women can feel comfortable to acknowledge those feelings.
